Fall Skin Reset: Why Cooler Months Are a Great Time for VI Peels & IPL

There’s something about the end of summer that makes you start noticing your skin a little differently.

Maybe a few new sun spots showed up. Maybe the freckles you already had look darker.

Maybe your skin feels a little rougher, more uneven, or just not quite as bright as it did a few months ago.

That’s completely normal. Summer usually means more sun, more heat, more time outside, more sunscreen, and sometimes more breakouts too. By the time fall rolls around, your skin may be ready for a little reset.

Two treatments we love talking about this time of year at Exhale Skin Studio are the VI Peel and IPL Photofacial.

They can help with some of the same concerns, but they work in very different ways. So if you’ve ever wondered which one might be better for your skin, here’s a simple breakdown.

Why Fall Is Such a Good Time to Focus on Your Skin

There’s no magic date when skincare treatments suddenly become “fall treatments,” but cooler months can make some corrective treatments easier to plan around.

Many advanced treatments require you to be careful with sun exposure before and after your appointment. Once beach days, pool days, vacations, and long afternoons outside start slowing down, it can be easier to stay consistent with that.

That doesn’t mean sunscreen gets put away until spring. You still need it every day.

But fall gives us a really nice window to start working on things like sun damage, pigmentation, redness, uneven tone, acne marks, and texture without immediately heading back into another summer.

So... What Did Summer Leave Behind?

Sometimes it’s obvious. Other times, your skin just looks a little “off.”

You may notice:

  • Brown spots or sun spots

  • Freckles that seem darker

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Redness or flushing

  • Visible little capillaries

  • Post-acne marks

  • Rough or dull texture

  • Fine lines that suddenly seem more noticeable

And sometimes it’s a mix of several things at once.

That’s why we don’t automatically recommend the same treatment to everyone. A brown spot, a red area, an acne mark, and uneven texture may all make your skin look less even, but they aren’t treated the same way.

VI Peel: When Your Skin Needs a Fresh Start

A VI Peel is a professional chemical peel that helps encourage controlled exfoliation and skin renewal.

It’s a great treatment to talk about if your concerns are more along the lines of acne, post-acne marks, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, uneven texture, fine lines, or skin that simply looks dull and tired.

After treatment, your skin goes through a peeling process over the following days. For many people, the most noticeable peeling happens around days three through five.

And yes, you may actually peel.

Some people peel a lot. Others have more subtle flaking. More peeling doesn’t automatically mean a better result.

The real goal is what comes after: skin that gradually looks brighter, smoother, clearer, and more even.

If you want the full breakdown of how it works, downtime, and what it can help improve, you can visit our VI Peel treatment page.

IPL Photofacial: When Color Is the Main Concern

IPL works completely differently.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and it’s often called a photofacial.

Instead of exfoliating the skin like a peel, IPL uses controlled pulses of light to target unwanted color within the skin.

That makes it especially helpful when what you’re noticing is:

  • Brown sun spots

  • Freckles

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Facial redness

  • Visible capillaries

  • Small blood vessels

  • Flushing

  • Rosacea-related redness

  • General sun damage

One of the interesting things about IPL is that brown spots can actually look darker before they look lighter.

After treatment, some spots may look almost like tiny coffee grounds or pepper flakes before they gradually come to the surface and fade.

It sounds a little strange until you see it happen, but it can be really satisfying to watch.

You can learn more about how the treatment works and what to expect on our IPL Photofacial treatment page.

VI Peel or IPL? Here’s the Easiest Way to Think About It.

If your biggest concerns are texture, acne marks, dullness, or broader skin renewal, a VI Peel may be worth exploring.

If you’re mainly bothered by brown spots, redness, freckles, or visible blood vessels, IPL may make more sense.

But there can absolutely be overlap.

Someone may have sun spots and rough texture. Another person may have post-acne pigmentation and redness. Sometimes one treatment clearly makes more sense, and sometimes we may talk about different treatments at different points in your skincare plan.

You don’t have to figure that part out before you come in.

What If Redness Is My Biggest Concern?

This is where IPL really stands apart from a chemical peel.

IPL can target red vascular discoloration, which means it may be helpful for things like facial flushing, visible capillaries, small blood vessels, and some rosacea-related redness.

A VI Peel isn’t doing the same thing.

So if the thing bothering you most is redness rather than texture or acne marks, we’ll probably have a very different conversation about your treatment options.

What About Dark Spots?

This is where both treatments may come into the conversation.

Dark spots can come from sun exposure, acne, inflammation, hormones, and other causes. And not all pigmentation should be treated the same way.

That’s important.

Sometimes a peel makes sense. Sometimes IPL does. Sometimes we need to look at the pigmentation first before recommending either one.

The goal isn’t to throw the strongest treatment at every dark spot.

The goal is to figure out what we’re actually treating.

Skin Tone Matters Too

This is especially important with IPL.

Because IPL works by targeting pigment, it is not appropriate for every skin tone. In deeper skin tones, the melanin in the skin can absorb more of the light energy, which can increase the risk of unwanted pigment changes.

That’s why a proper assessment matters before treatment.

VI Peel treatments can be used across a broader range of skin tones, but that still doesn’t mean every peel is right for every person.

Your skin history, pigmentation, medications, sensitivity, and current skincare routine all matter.

What Should You Expect Afterward?

After a VI Peel, expect dryness, tightness, flaking, and peeling over the next several days.

The biggest rule?

Don’t pick.

Let your skin shed naturally and follow your aftercare instructions.

After IPL, you may have some temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling. If brown pigment was treated, those areas may look darker before they begin to fade.

With both treatments, sun protection is incredibly important.

One Appointment May Not Be the Whole Story

We always want to be realistic about this part.

One treatment can absolutely make a difference, but years of sun damage, pigmentation, redness, or texture changes may take time.

You may benefit from a series of treatments, or your plan may change as your skin improves.

That’s one reason fall is such a nice time to start.

It gives us time to work gradually instead of trying to rush everything at once.

Still Not Sure Which One You Need?

That’s okay.

Most people don’t walk in knowing whether they need a VI Peel, IPL, microneedling, or something completely different.

You can simply tell us what you’re seeing.

Maybe it’s:

“My skin looks uneven.”

“I hate these brown spots.”

“I’m always red.”

“My acne is gone, but the marks aren’t.”

“My skin just looks tired.”

That’s enough for us to start the conversation.

At Exhale Skin Studio, we’ll look at your skin, talk about what’s bothering you, and help you decide what makes the most sense.

Ready for Your Fall Skin Reset?

Summer may be over, but the things it left behind don’t necessarily have to stick around.

If you’re ready to work on sun damage, pigmentation, redness, acne marks, uneven texture, or dull skin, fall can be a great time to begin.
